The key to understanding how to build the best wearable product for consumers begins with identifying consumer behaviors and needs. Signals Playbook™, a data analytics platform, recently analyzed thousands of consumer discussions (blogs, forums, social media posts, and product reviews) to identify the top benefits consumers want in their wearables.

We were especially curious to analyze the benefits that are least addressed by wearable technology products today to look for future market opportunities.

1. Accuracy

Consumer desire for accurate technology is not new. Accurate wearable products are in high demand and the market is responding. Across all market segments, consumer online statements about wearable technology mention accuracy.

2. Value for Money

Consumers discuss topics focused around 'value for money' yet most businesses address this topic least. Price is a key value driver for consumers and is one of the leading factors influencing purchase.

3. Durability

Our findings show that wearable products in the market fail to achieve consumer engagement because of poor user experience flaws:

  • Short battery life
  • Not water resistant
  • Fail to experience a feeling of progress toward weight goals
  • Band breaks

Any or all of these flaws is enough to make consumers disengage from wearing their wearable devices.

4. Compact

The desire for compact, lightweight and user friendly technology applies across all market segments for wearables in the industry. While the gap between online statements and product claims is not as wide as others for wearable products, this is a benefit companies should take particular notice of.

5. Long-Term User Engagement

The data we collected shows us that sustained user engagement is emerging as a key unmet consumer need largely due to the fact that companies have ignored the benefits that will lead consumers to use and keep their wearables on.

Although the path to sustained long-term engagement and consumer adoption is far from being solved, consumer sentiments around poor user experience have resulted in companies' desire to start building wearable products that provide actionable insights and recommendations.
